Bilingualism and language attitude in Melilla (Spain)

This study examines levels of bilingualism and language attitude in the autonomous Spanish city Melilla. Located on North African coast, Melilla has a population 86,000 inhabitants that is roughly divided between residents Iberian origin Origin. Based responses to questionnaire (111 participants) sociolinguistic interviews (20 participants), our results show high Tamazight among sector origin, while remains monolingual Spanish. We also dominant public domain, including administration education, maintained as family community language. Overall, participants express positive towards Melillan variety Tamazight, their co-existence part multicultural nature city.
